Executive Director, Foundation / Vice President of Philanthropy

Our client seeks a Vice President of Philanthropy (VP).  Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the VP is an integral member of the hospital leadership team and has responsibility and authority for all fundraising programs and activities that benefit the System.  Also serving as Executive Director of its foundation, the VP partners with the foundation’s volunteer Board to raise philanthropic support for the Medical Center and its affiliated programs and services.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Develop and execute a results-oriented fundraising model with a sustainable major gifts program that leverages the   relationships and connections of Board members and key volunteers to secure new and ongoing philanthropic commitments, its mission, programs, and services.
• Create, execute, and monitor a strategic plan for philanthropy that includes a comprehensive, systemwide development program.  Set challenging stretch goals and realistic budgets, and direct major gift activity aimed at meeting them.
• Develop and implement annual fundraising plans that include general and specific purpose appeals, short- and long-term campaigns, major gifts, planned giving, foundation proposals, corporate solicitations, and special events. 
• Participate in long-range strategic and capital planning, serving on executive-level committees as appropriate, and acting as a partner and mentor to CEO and Foundation Board in all fundraising matters.
• Work closely with CEO, Foundation Board Chair, and others to identify, qualify, and develop Board prospects, and maximize Board members’ investment of time and ensure a rewarding experience.
• Forge strong working relationships with CEO, Foundation Board, senior clinical and administrative leadership, and leverage such to identify major donor prospects for cultivation and solicitation (e.g. work closely with the medical leadership to identify “grateful patient/family” opportunities).
• Hire, train, mentor, and evaluate a productive and qualified staff to achieve performance goals, including supervision, periodic performance measurement and feedback, and professional development support.
• Manage procedures and programs for gift recording and acknowledgment and donor recognition, and ensure accurate financial records and files in accordance with IRS and donor requirements.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s/master’s preferred; 10+ years’ progressive leadership experience, preferably in healthcare, with proven track record in major gifts, planned giving, and capital campaigns at five-, six-, and seven-figure gift level; entrepreneurial, results-oriented leader with superb communications, negotiating, and organizational skills, high integrity and work ethic; Enthusiasm, initiative and experience working closely with volunteer leaders, senior administrators, physician leaders, and sophisticated, affluent donors; expert in guiding/advising CEO and Board through all phases of the development process; financially savvy, politically astute with sense of humor; independent thinker who presents a balanced analysis, has solid relationship management and influencing skills, and effectively builds consensus while engendering trust and credibility.
